Biographical Sketch of Clara Jane (Fleming) Wheeler

Clara Jane was born at Pepin in Hicks Valley Sept 8, 1868. She practically lived all her life in this community attending the Hicks Valley School, and later working in Reads Landing and working at dress making at Wabasha, Minn.
On Oct. 15, 1890 she was married to Geo. M. Wheeler and three sons and 3 daughters were born to them, namely: Marlin, Alva, Velna, Myra, Ralph, Graydon,
In the fall of 1935 on Nov, 13 they (Geo & Clara) started on a trip to visit the West, and spent 8 mos. Visiting relatives and friends returning to their home at Pepin on July 13, 1936.
Geo. Wheeler was rural mail carrier on Rural Route 1 for twenty nine years being relieved of this work just before leaving for the West. Nov 1935.
They returned the following July 1936, being gone exactly 8 months to the day.
Addition by Bud Fleming: Local legend has it that John Fleming opposed his oldest daughter's marriage to George Wheeler because he was just a poor
farmer.
