Bettie Jayanne Angell, 79, of Independence,
Missouri passed away on January 11, 2018 at home.
Visitation with the Rosary will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 West 93rd Street, Overland Park,
Kansas 66212, with burial following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City,
Missouri.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas.
Jayanne was born April 6, 1938, in Independence, Missouri. She graduated with a B.S. in English from Central Missouri State University in 1960, she received a M.A. in Speech from Central Missouri State University in 1962 and she received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri/Kansas City.
She was employed by the Kansas State Department of Education, Topeka, Kansas, retired in 1994 after 23 years of service (1969-1992). She was an English teacher at Lawrence High School, Lawrence, KS for seven years (1962-1969).
Jayanne was active in Girl Scouts of America for 35 years and she was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Overland Park,
Kansas, where she participated in Bible Study, Book Club, and the Catholic Charities Family Assistance Center.
She was recognized as the 2010 Charitable Volunteer of the Year by the Knights of Malta and Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas and Catholic Charities of Kansas City.
Author, Sara Paretsky, dedicated her 1990 thriller "Burn Marks" to Jayanne, who was Sara's high school English teacher.
Jayanne was preceded in death by father, Waller James Angell, Sr.; mother, Madge Mae Wright Angell; brother, Waller James Angell, Jr.; and her roommates, Janette Barnes and Margaret Caffrey.
She is survived by her sister, Donna L. Hoyungowa; two nieces, Laura Jacquez-Bados (Marcos) and Lisa Jacquez; three nephews, Dan Cott (Kathy), Shannon Jacquez (Misty) and Lonnie Lehman (Kristen); as well as great nieces and great nephews.
