Day 3 Explore Barcelona Embark ship Destination: Barcelona
Activity Note: The Giant Puppet Museum is closed on Mondays. In this case, your Trip Experience Leader will provide an alternate activity. Breakfast: At the hotel. Morning: Set off on a tour of Barcelona, the capital of Spain's autonomous Catalonia region. Spain’s second-largest city has been a vital cultural hub since the Middle Ages, and it retains a unique and independent character which we’ll experience on our tour today. The city streets feature an elegant blend of old and new architecture. Scattered throughout the city, we'll find the works of Barcelona’s most celebrated architect, Antoni Gaudi, whose trademark Catalan modernist style has made the city famous around the world and lends the city an enchanted, almost surreal atmosphere. After, we'll explore the winding lanes of the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter). Located in the heart of the city, this neighborhood provides a glimpse into medieval Barcelona, with some structures dating as far back as Roman times. During your tour, stop at the Giant Puppet Museum for an in-depth glimpse of Catalan life and culture. Chat with locals who construct these elaborately decorated puppets, featured in festivals and processions throughout the year. Then, you’ll have time to make your own discoveries. Perhaps you’ll join your Trip Experience Leader for a discovery walk to bustling Rambla Avenue and the Boqueria Market. Lunch: On your own. You may wish to sample a traditional paella, the one-pan rice dish that features seafood—usually shrimp. Afternoon: We’ll head to the port and board the M/V Clio, our home for the next two weeks as we make our way across the sea towards Athens. The ship is staffed by a friendly, English-speaking crew who will be eager to welcome you aboard and show you to your room. The lounge is equipped with cozy couches and chairs, and a topside Sun Deck features ample deck chairs for admiring the scenery. We’ll meet the crew and our captain once we board, and they will lead a safety briefing before we set sail for Italy. Before dinner, our Trip Experience Leader will present the first in a nightly series of Port Talks, in which we'll learn about the discoveries we can expect to make tomorrow. Dinner: After the talk, we head for the ship’s dining room where we’ll enjoy a Captain’s Welcome Dinner. In addition to the standard dinner options, you’ll enjoy a few more extravagant offerings at this celebratory meal. While the dress code remains casual, some travelers choose to wear a day dress or slacks to the Captain’s Dinner. Evening: At leisure. Feel free to familiarize yourself with the ship’s amenities and get to know your fellow travelers in the lounge as we sail for Sardinia. |
